Greenland was one of the earliest settlements in the State, and a parish of Portsmouth, known as Strawbery Banke. Once Captain Francis Champernowne moved from Strawbery Banke in 1640, he has settled in the area of the present Portsmouth Country Club. And although its original name should have been Canary, Captain Champernowne named his farm Greenland.
